Fisher & Paykel Washer 53 Error Code

Content status: Verified

Error code 53
Appliance Washer
Quick answer

Code 53 is a step test failure where the motor and drive check out but the rotor position sensing does not.

Model compatibility: Fisher & Paykel reuses codes across series and model years, so 53 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

During a motor step test the motor did not step in the right direction although it was connected and driven, so rotor position sensing is at fault.

Where the code comes from

The Motor Controller runs a step test. Code 53 appears when the motor turned the wrong way in that test even though the controller had picked up a connected motor and a working drive. The manual therefore places the fault in rotor position sensing. Phases 2 to 6 are covered.

The manual’s three checks

  1. Harness: check continuity along the Rotor Position harness, and that its connectors are seated properly at the Motor Controller end and at the Rotor Position Sensor end.
  2. Sensor: put an RPS Tester on it and read the sensor patterns; if it is faulty, fit a new one.
  3. Motor Controller: change the module, since the circuitry that does the sensing may be at fault.

A discrepancy in the manual

Printed against this entry is the binary string 00110011. Code 51 (the diverter valve fault) carries exactly that string too, so one of the two is wrong. Trust the number shown on the display rather than the binary pattern, and let a technician verify it in diagnostic mode.

Motor description from the specification

In the specification the Series 11 wash motor is a three phase, brushless DC design with electronic commutation and direct drive. Code 53 leaves that motor and its drive out of it, because the controller found both present and working.

What an owner can do

Nothing in the list is a home job; an RPS Tester is specialist kit. Bring the code and the model number.

Other step test codes

  • Code 54: no current found, so the motor did not step.
  • Code 55: a system step fail that begins with the rotor position sensor.
  • Code 243: stepper test failure on Phase 6.
