Code 54 is a motor step test that found no current: an unconnected motor or a faulty motor drive.
Model compatibility: Fisher & Paykel reuses codes across series and model years, so 54 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
No current was detected in the motor step test, so the motor is not connected or the Motor Controller's drive is faulty.
What the controller saw
A current should flow during the step test. Under code 54 none did, and the motor failed to step to the correct position. The manual’s reading: the motor is not connected, or the motor drive inside the Motor Controller module is faulty. It applies to Phases 2 to 6.
Where to look, one by one
Harness: continuity of the motor harness, and connectors correctly applied at the motor and at the Motor Controller module.
Motor: continuity across the motor phases; the bridge terminal on the stator must not be open circuit or burnt, and a stator that is gets replaced.
Module: replace the Motor Controller module.
Stator figures
For Phase 6 the stator is 16 ohms per phase, matching Phase 5. The manual says this stator cannot be swapped with earlier models and can be recognised by its smaller terminal connections. Those readings need a meter and belong to a technician.
Limits of the code
Code 54 does not say which of the three failed. The sequence only follows the way the manual arranges the checks. Telling apart a wiring or connector fault, an open or burnt stator, and a bad Motor Controller is technician work.
Compare with these
Code 53: also a step test failure, but there the drive works and the sensor does not.
Code 136: a motor stall, where the controller cannot get the motor going.
