Error code56
ApplianceWasher
Quick answer
Fault 56 means the basket check gave no usable answer about the tub; clutch and pressure tube are the first two places in the manual.
Model compatibility: Fisher & Paykel reuses codes across series and model years, so 56 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The basket check could not determine a valid tub status on Phase 4 to 6 machines.
Reading fault 56
The manual calls it “Basket Check No Valid Fault”. A basket check tests whether the basket is engaged. Fault 56 is shown when that test could not settle on a valid tub status. Phases 4, 5 and 6 are listed.
Not the same as 40
Fault 40 is a specific result: the basket was found disengaged while the pressure sensor reported an empty tub. Fault 56 is the absence of any clear result. The first two areas to check are the same for both, so a washer that has shown 40 as well deserves a look at fault 40 too.
Order of checks in the manual
Clutch: foreign objects or clothing that keep it from re-engaging.
Pressure tube: it should still be attached and free of kinks.
With both fine, suspect the pressure transducer inside the Motor Controller module.
Only after the clutch and tube does the manual turn to the sensor side.
Replacement parts named
Phase 4: the Motor Controller module.
Phases 5 and 6: the Rotor Position Sensor.
Deciding on those parts is service work. Pull the plug before any panel comes off, and leave the module and sensor to a technician.
Other basket and tube codes
Fault 47 is the same style of basket check problem for Phase 2 and 3 machines.
Fault 39 covers a pressure tube that is blocked, kinked or off.
Fault 160 is the basket re-engaging during agitate.
