Codes 17-20, 22, 23 and 28-30 are one Phase 1 fault. The manual's first move is switching off for 5 seconds and restarting.
Model compatibility: Fisher & Paykel reuses codes across series and model years, so 17 / 18 / 19 / 20 … may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Phase 1: Display Module and Motor Controller out of sequence (codes 17-20, 22, 23, 28-30).
A Fisher & Paykel washer showing 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 28, 29 or 30 is reporting the same thing. The service manual files all of them under Phase 1 as “Display / Motor Controller out of Sequence”.

“Refer to fault code 17”
Meaning of “out of sequence”
Two electronic modules, the Display Module and the Motor Controller, step through a wash cycle together. These codes say they have fallen out of step. How that happens is not described.
Manual steps
Cut the power to the machine at the wall.
Wait 5 seconds, restore power and run the cycle again.
If the code persists, a technician turns off the auto restart feature and repeats the test.
That test brings up a different fault code, and the repair carries on from the new code.
Only the first two steps are open to an owner. The third relies on a service mode. Auto restart lets the machine keep retrying a minor fault for up to eight minutes before any code is shown; the manual treats it as a service aid that stays enabled in the customer’s home, and a technician disables it just for testing.
Other communication entries
Each of these is its own entry in the manual; none is described as a follow-on to 17 to 30.
Code 4 and code 5 cover Phase 1 communication between Motor Controller and Display Module.
Codes 81 to 95 are the Phase 2 to 3 communication entries between Display and Motor Controller.
