E3 is read two ways: the cooktop got too hot, or the pan will not work with induction. Test the pan, then cool and restart.
Model compatibility: Fisher & Paykel reuses codes across series and model years, so E3 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The owner care guides describe E3 as the cooktop overheating, while support articles describe it as cookware that does not suit induction.
The manufacturer attaches two different meanings to E3. Before anything else, find out which one applies by looking at your pan.

Magnet test
Put a magnet against the underside of the pan. A magnet that sticks means the pan suits induction. A magnet that slides off means the pan will not work on this surface, and the answer is another pan, not a repair. The troubleshooting pages in the care guides also note that a pan which is undersized, or sits off-center on its zone, will not heat as it should.
Pan passes the test? Handle it as a heat problem
Turn the cooktop off and wait until it has cooled; after that, switch it on again, as the guides direct.
Think about where your pots stood. The guides blame cookware near the front edge for a display that goes black from overheating, and suggest using the rear zones instead.
Confirm there is good airflow around the cooktop.
Start again with less on the surface.
Right after an overheat the cooktop may respond more slowly. The guides explain that it drops into a reduced-power mode to protect itself while it cools, so this is normal.
Persistent E3
If the pan passes the magnet test, the cooktop has cooled, and E3 still comes back, record the code and get in touch with Customer Care or a service technician, as the guides recommend.
Compare with
E4, the other overheating entry in the owner guides.
Er62, which concerns where the pan sits, not what it is made of.
